Meditational Monday

Meditational Monday

I have been meditating for a long time, but this last year I decided to really focus and to practice it regularly. It has made a difference for me. I notice this difference in many things, but mostly in my overall sense of inner peace.

There is a wealth of information about meditation online so I won’t go into the many, many benefits of meditation here. I’ll simply share with you a beginner meditation from Mayo Clinic.

I also found a lovely visual and audio meditation on youtube. It is 8 hours long – much too long for a meditation, but I found that leaving it on while I work is very relaxing.

It is hot springs, early morning, rain forrest:

Give It Up

What do you do about something that you have no control over?  Someone else has the control.  There is nothing you can do about anything.  And you know this because you have tried and tried again to do something about it, but it has just back fired in your face.  Your intentions are good.  You cannot understand why the universe, why God is not responding to your loving thoughts towards the situation, the person.  Nothing works.

And you are making yourself sick just going over and over the situation.  Kicking yourself while you are down.  It is occupying time and brain space.  It is coloring your view.  It is dampening your spirit.

In this case, all you can change is your thoughts.  All you have any control over is yourself and your thoughts.  Change your thought.

I have done my best.  I am doing my best.  I love and forgive myself.  I am worthy.

Think About Bliss

As we are clearing up and flipping our thoughts, let’s think about our bliss.  It may be a very foreign concept to you at this moment.  It does not have to be.  Bliss is not an exotic place that you cannot afford to go to.  It is within your reach.

Start by throwing in a couple of affirmations.  Bliss is within my reach.  I can be blissful.

What is bliss?  It is different for each of us.  What we think of as bliss can also change over a lifetime.  It may not always be the same.  Start to define what is bliss to you.  It can be as simple as snuggling with a child, or as big as starting a foundation.  What is bliss to you?

Even if things seem to be falling down around you – just consider bliss.  You do not have to be blissful.  Just think about it.  Just open up a little space in your brain for thinking about bliss.

Restart Your Day

When you feel like you are dragging through your day try a restart.  Stop and notice what you are feeling.  Are there any thoughts you need to flip around?  If negative thoughts are keeping you from having a productive day, try flipping them to create positive affirmations.

I am tired and overwhelmed = God and the universe provides me with everything I need.

I just can’t do it all = I am doing great.  I have compassion for myself.

Next, find something that lifts your spirit up.   What does your spirit need?   Here are some ideas:  Good music, visiting supportive people, taking a walk, reading a good book, organizing a closet, preparing a great meal, taking a bubble bath, taking photos, working out, prayer, meditation.  Each one of us has a different list of things that lift our spirits.  Make your list and keep it close by where you can see it often.

Now do something off of that list.  None of this works unless you actually carry through and do it.  Pick one thing and commit yourself to it.  Follow through.  You will feel better.  But you have to do it.   It may not feel right to do something for yourself in the middle of the day – or whenever you need to – but it is right.  It will refresh you so that you can get on with your day.

Once you are feeling refreshed, remember that you are on track.  You are not lost and wandering.  You have fed your spirit and now you can get on with the rest of your day.

The Wounds Of Your Past

“You can accept or reject the way you are treated by other people.  But until you heal the wounds of your past, you will continue to bleed.  You can bandage the bleeding with food, with alcohol, with drugs, with work, with cigarettes, with sex, but eventually, it will ooze through and stain your life.”  Iylana Vanzant

The wounds of your past.  There is a whole lot of faulty thinking in there if they are still wounds.  The past cannot hurt us unless we let it.  We let the past hurt us by thinking about it and allowing the negative emotions to surface over and over without ever changing the thoughts.

The truth is that you are in charge of your thoughts.  Take responsibility for them.  If you are having angry or fearful thoughts, stop and notice what they are saying.  Allow yourself to be vulnerable and really feel your thoughts.  Ask yourself, what am I getting out of these thoughts?  How am I holding myself back with these thoughts?  How would my world be different if I could change these thoughts?

Flip the thought around.  Try it on for size.  How does it feel.  Keep flipping the thought every time it comes up.  Move beyond your history and into a whole new world.  You are the only one who can create it.  Change the thought and your feelings will follow it.

Only you can choose to let the anger and fear go.  And only then can you begin to experience peace and comfort in your own skin.  You do not have to accept the hurt or wrong that someone else has done, you just have to let it go.  Forgive yourself.  Let go of the hope that the situation never happened.  It happened and it is over.  Let go of the judgment of others and their behaviors.  You can only control yourself.  Move into the now.

Flip Thoughts

Flip Thoughts

Also known as affirmations.  I like flip thoughts because that is really what we are doing – flipping our thoughts around so they can work better for us.  Once we become aware of our thoughts and start to notice how many positive thoughts and how many negative thoughts we are having, we can start to flip those negative thoughts around.  We start to realize how the negative thoughts have held us back.  We start to change that.

Some thoughts stick around.  They manifest themselves through our emotions.   When we try to flip those thoughts, the ones that have been around for a long time, they flip back.  We can get tired from trying to flip them over and over.  It is good to look into those particular thoughts.  Looking into negative thoughts that just will not go away is a step from self control to self mastery.

Take a thought that is bugging you the worst right now.  Write it down and really look at it.  When did you first have that thought?  Who said it out loud to you?  Think back and then think about other times that thought came up.  You might have to work on a particular thought in more than one setting.  Be patient with yourself and just come back to it as you can.  Thoughts will come up that will not be pleasant.  It is not easy work and it does not feel comfortable.  On the other side of the work you are doing is something really wonderful though – peace of mind.  It is worth it.

After you have identified where the thought came from and what is behind it, think about it again.  Then flip it.  It may not feel natural or even right, but give it a try.  You may still have more work to do on that particular thought, but it is still okay to flip the thought to get a feel for what it will be once you have cleared it out.  It will also help to clarify the thought.

Here is an example:

(Negative thought) Nobody listens = (Flip thought) There are people who will listen.  You are listening.  God is listening.  The universe is listening.  You can find others who will listen and even understand.  Not everyone is going to listen or agree with you and that is okay.

This Is It

Emptiness is a symptom that you are not living creatively. ~ Maxwell Maltz

“There is no “special” moment.

This is it.

There is no special person to give your gifts to.

Everyone is it.”

These words rang with me this morning.  This is it.  This is not a rehearsal.  This is what you have.  Right here.  Right now.  This is it.

I have been putting off some vital things in my life.  I have been hoping I could heal a little and come out of the other side with new insight.   But right here in this moment, I have new insight.  Every single day of my healing there has been new insight.  I may never see the whole picture and have it wrapped up nicely with a bow on top.  That is really what I have been waiting for.  That is way too much.

Procrastination has been the name of the game.  I have fought with this many times in my life, but usually bounced back fairly quickly.  Not this round of play though.  This round has lasted a very long time.  Way too long.  I am tired of it and I have no one else to blame anymore.  It is all me.

If the first step is self control and the second step is self love, the third step is action.  Do it.  Stop thinking about it.  Do it.  Stop planning for it.  Do it.  I can make lists upon lists until the end of time, but I have to do it.

There is no better time than this minute to begin to take steps toward what you really want out of life.
